On January 23, we are pleased to present our first programme of the new year where guest poets from BookThugs will be joined by singer/songwriter Mark Martyre. The evening will consist of poetry readings from Mark and the BookThug Poets plus Mark will also perform new songs from his newest CD followed by an open mic of improvised readings and accompanied SoundSkapes by Michael Menegon.
Mark Martyre is a Canadian writer and musician whose latest album, Down, Record has received critical acclaim and has garnered national and international attention. He’s been compared to other notable songwriters like Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan, and has been heralded as a “troubadour for a new age,” by music reviewers. One reviewer wrote, “He’s the kind of artist that if you were at a bar, and he just stepped up and started playing, you would stop what you’re doing and listen. …You don’t need gimmicks and half naked people and pyrotechnics all the time. You need talent, and this guy is chock full of it.” For more information visit www.markmartyre.com.
The SoundSkapes that Michael Menegon produces are organically driven and wildly imaginative. His playing adds another dimension to the spoken work, enhancing the poetry in perfect balance. In addition to being an accomplished percussionist for over 30 years, he is also a singer/songwriter, getting set to release his first collection of songs in the near future.
